With all of the amazing athletes that Walkersville High School has, many of them participate on more than one team. This is a huge commitment that takes time, effort, and dedication.
Even though spring sports officially start on March 1st, many of the student-athletes have already been working hard throughout the winter on another team.
Senior Jack Chavez commented about the more difficult transition he will have to make from his winter to spring sports. “It’s going to be a very hard transition from swim to lacrosse because they are completely different,” said Chavez. “I’m not in running shape, I’m in swimming shape.” This can be difficult for athletes because of how quickly the turnaround is. “I also haven’t touched my lacrosse stick in a few months, so skills will be a little rusty,” Chavez explained.
With this being many of the seniors last season in their sports, it can be a bittersweet time. “I’m looking forward to playing my last year of lacrosse with the friends that I started my career with back when I was eight,” Chavez said. “I dropped time in all my events, so I feel like I ended my high school career correctly.”
Some athletes, however, have an easier transition to make. The breakout track star senior Emma Crouch is continuing track by running in the spring season. “The transition will be a little hard, but because of indoor states, there won’t really be a break in between the two. But it will be different running outside for meets,” Crouch explained. With her first season of track being record breaking, Crouch isn’t stopping there; “I am excited to run new events and break new records with my team. I feel very happy about how the indoor season went. My goal was to break the school record which I did and place in states, but I haven’t run in that yet.”
Even though track is a new love for Crouch, she has spent most of her athletic career playing soccer which ended in the fall. “I will miss participating in track a lot, but not as much as soccer because I have played soccer all my life.”
A select few athletes who play multiple sports at Walkersville are also continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Senior BJ Borowski is one of them. He is attending the University of Tampa in the fall playing D1 lacrosse. “I’m thankful that I have the opportunity and am really excited to play lacrosse at Tampa the next four years.” Borowski said. Not only does Borowski excel at lacrosse, but he is a member of the varsity wrestling team. “Wrestling put me in the best shape ever this season. During wrestling season we do a lot of conditioning so I’m usually in pretty good shape by the time lacrosse season rolls around.”
As the winter season ends for Borowski, the spring season is looking very strong after he had shoulder surgery last summer, “I’m definitely looking forward to getting back on the field. No matter what happens this year, I want it to be fun.” Even though it will take a little time to get back into the swing of things, Borowski is happy with the way his senior year has been, “Senior year has been the best year of high school and I know the next four years will match or even top this year. Definitely looking forward to it.”
With all of the athletes that are hungry for winning seasons in the spring, it is shaping up to be another record-breaking season for Walkersville athletics.
